Laurel & Hardy: Frauds and Frenzies (1918)

Goonish comedian Larry Semon, whose two-reel laughfests were the envy of Hollywood's "comedy colony," celebrated his second year as a Vitagraph star with such hilarious concoctions as Frauds and Frenzies. Seldom bothering with a plot, actor-director Semon was devoted to elaborate and costly sight gags and wild and wooly chases. In this one, he plays an energetic convict who is put to work in a stone quarry. After driving his captors cuckoo, Semon makes his escape, sparking yet another of his frenetic slapstick chase finales. So dominant was the Semon personality that reviewers barely paid any attention to his co-star: 28-year-old Stan Laurel.
